1. What is the purpose of the project?
The purpose of the project is to gather practical experience from sailors regarding the system’s performance and reliability to improve the user experience. The experiences and feedback from test sailors will be used to enhance the system. As a test sailor, your current engine will be uninstalled, Ocean One and a suitable battery pack will be installed, and at the end of the project, Ocean One will be uninstalled again unless you choose to buy it at a significantly reduced price.

2. Why should regular sailors be involved in the testing phase?
Regular sailors should be involved in the testing phase because they are the best experts in sailing. Their practical experience and insights are invaluable for testing and improving the Searine system. By finding sailors who will help test the system, we ensure that the product meets the real needs and expectations of those who will use it the most – the sailors themselves.

3. What is the timeline for the test sailors?

  • Application period: July 19 – September 15, 2024.
  • The test sailors will be announced in October 2024.
  • A refundable deposit of 50,000 DKK must be paid to have Ocean One installed in your boat by November 2024
  • The boats must be at a shipyard for a short period within the timeframe of February 1, 2025 – March 31, 2025.
  • The test period will start on April 1 and end on September 1, 2025.
  • If you choose to have Ocean One uninstalled after the test period, it will be removed and your deposit will be refunded.
  • If you choose to keep the system, you can purchase it at a significantly reduced price of 95,000 DKK plus the appropriate battery pack. The deposit will be deducted from this amount.

4. How many testers is Searine looking for?
We are looking for three sailors to help test and improve Ocean One.

5. How are sailors selected to test the system?
Sailors are selected based on a set of criteria described in the application form.
To help us select the most relevant test sailors, we have established an expert panel consisting of individuals who work daily in various areas of sailing.

6. Who is on the expert panel?
The expert panel consists of specialists in different fields related to sailing. One of their roles is to help recruit three recreational sailors for testing the system.

7. How to apply to become a test sailor?
To apply to become a test sailor, you need to fill out the following application form:

8. What do test sailors need to pay to participate?
At the start of the project, test sailors will be charged a deposit of 50,000 DKK, which will be refunded at the end of the project in September 2025. If you choose to keep the system in your boat at the end of the project, the 50,000 DKK will be deducted from the total price of the system.

9. Can test sailors subsequently purchase Ocean One?
The three test sailors have the option to purchase it after the test period at a significantly reduced price of 95,000 DKK including VAT plus the accompanying battery pack.

10. What about the installation and uninstallation of Ocean One?
As a test sailor, your current engine will be uninstalled, Ocean One along with an appropriate battery pack will be installed, and at the end of the project, Ocean One will be uninstalled again unless you choose to buy it at a significantly reduced price of 95,000 DKK including VAT plus the accompanying battery pack, which will cost between 50,000 and 90,000 DKK including VAT, depending on the boat size and configuration.

11. When will Ocean One be available on the market?
Ocean One is expected to be available on the market in 2025.

12. What is unique about Ocean One?
The uniqueness of Ocean One lies in its advanced technology that enhances the sailing experience by making it more reliable and environmentally friendly. Additionally, it requires significantly less maintenance and is much cheaper to operate daily. Ocean One uses a 360-degree rotatable propeller, making boat maneuvering easier, especially in harbors. Furthermore, the system allows for recharging via hydrogeneration through the propeller.

13. How fast can one sail with Ocean One?
Ocean One delivers significantly more torque than equivalent diesel engines. The boat’s top speed will be slightly lower (0.5 – 1.0 knots) than with a comparable diesel engine, but the boat will be able to maintain speed better in rough seas and headwinds due to the higher torque.

14. How much less CO2 does Ocean One emit compared to diesel engines?
A typical trip with a 10-ton diesel-powered sailboat emits an average of 1,400 grams of CO2 per nautical mile at 6 knots, and the emission almost doubles at just 1 knot more. Charging Searine’s electric solution in the harbor reduces this CO2 to only 106 grams per nautical mile. And when hydrogenerating, the CO2 emission is zero.

15. What batteries are used for Ocean One?
Ocean One is designed to use modular battery packs developed by Searine. These batteries are specially built and based on lithium battery technology without cobalt content.

16. How many watts is the battery (watts or kWh)?
We recommend and design configurations of approximately 50 kWh and up.

17. How does Ocean One fit different-sized boats?
Ocean One fits into existing motor foundations in sailboats sized 30-60 feet with a rotatable drive. For boats with a fixed saildrive, a hole for the saildrive must be made. We follow an industrial standard and use an adapter to fit various boat types.

18. Which boats can the system be used for?
The system is developed for sailboats with a saildrive in the size range of 30-60 feet.

19. How is the battery charged?
Hydrogeneration: Example: At 8 knots under sail, one can hydrogenerate for 2 hours to get one hour of motor sailing at 6 knots – depending on conditions.
Regular 230-volt charging at the harbor / granny chargers.

20. How far can Ocean One sail on a single charge?
The range depends on various factors: wind, temperature, hull shape, boat size, battery size, fouling, speed. We aim for 50 nautical miles in calm weather.

21. Is the electric sail motor quiet?
Yes, the electric sail motor is known for being very quiet and low in vibration compared to traditional combustion engines. This makes sailing more enjoyable and reduces noise pollution in the marine environment.

22. Is Ocean One an environmentally friendly solution?
Yes, the electric sail motor is an environmentally friendly solution as it does not produce direct emissions during operation. This reduces air and water pollution and helps preserve the environment for future generations.

23. Is Ocean One easy to install on my sailboat – and how is it done?
The installation of the electric propulsion system can vary depending on the boat’s design and size. The system is modular.

24. How many parts does the system come in?
The propulsion system is divided into two main parts – saildrive and motor. The battery system is divided into modules – so it can be adapted to the individual boat. A control unit is included for system management along with an assembly guide.
