Karin Steen Steffensen

I’m 48, a mother of three, and married. I’ve been a skipper for many years, crossing the Atlantic four times. I participated in the DR program ‘Togtet,’ where my crew and I sailed from Iceland to Canada under Viking-like conditions. I give talks on ‘Glad Skib,’ focusing on ethical and sustainable sailing, and teach sailing at Egmont Højskole. My passion for the sea and commitment to sustainability inspire others to rethink their connection with nature and maritime activities.

I am 32 years old, married, and a father of two. I have a diverse background in the maritime industry, specializing in electronics and electrical systems in boats. I authored the book ‘Electrical Installations in Ships and Boats under 24 Meters,’ covering ISO, NMEA, and ABYC standards. Starting as a boatbuilder, I transitioned to a marine electrician, focusing on intricate boat electrical systems. Now, as a consultant at ISO, I help develop and update industry standards. I also advocate for sustainable sailing practices – just like Searine – in Danish culture, promoting a greener maritime future.

I own Nordbjærg’s shipyard and marine shop at Skovshoved Harbor, known for our use of the latest technology and environmentally friendly paints. With Jørgen Jensen, I built an electric boat powered by electricity and a methanol fuel cell that nearly circumnavigated Zealand. I actively participate in competitive and match racing, constantly seeking new, eco-friendly methods. At my shipyard, we not only sell equipment but also develop innovative sailing systems. Being involved from the start allows us to design better, cheaper, and easier-to-install solutions, ensuring high efficiency, reliability, and quality.

I am married with adult children and work as the Harbor Master at Rungsted Harbor, Denmark’s third-largest harbor. We manage 850 boats and host over 1.5 million visitors each season. We are modernizing the marina to meet future needs and climate challenges. I am committed to supporting this development, ensuring our harbor sets new standards. I look forward to participating in Searine’s project, even though our harbor’s resources are municipally controlled. Upgrading marinas to support electric propulsion in pleasure boats is essential for reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainable sailing. I look forward to participating in the expert panel. Marinas and their infrastructure need to be continuously updated so we can support the transition to electric propulsion in pleasure boats.
